A Triolet

THE TRIOLET. Origin; France

The Triolet (though originally utilized as a vehicle for carrying serious poetry) is more recently considered to be a light form that should not carry too intense or complicated a meaning.

It is an eight line poem where the first line is repeated for line four and the first two lines are repeated as a refrain for lines seven and eight.
The style is most often written in fairly short lines with mixed meter.

Triolet Rhyme Scheme ; A B a A a b A B

EXAMPLE

I beg you, let me rest
and dance my way to dreamstate
while the sun bows to the west.
I beg you, let me rest
and waltz ... at my subconscious's request
to the rhythm of my heart rate.
I beg you, let me rest
and dance my way to dreamstate.

Ven,

My mother used to speak of triolets as her most favorite form of poetry. I have been trying to find a place that describes the triolet, thanks for posting.

Thanks VivaldiFall,

My son bought me a book called "The Poets Manual and Rhyming Dictionary" by Frances Stillman for Christmas and I highly recommend it. I found quiet a few poetry forms in there that I had not come across before, the Triolet being just one of them.

I'm thoroughly enjoying trying out the different styles although I have to admit a lot of what I've written so far is unworthy of posting

I shall probably post some other forms once I've practised a little more and progressed further though it's pages.

Ethics

Postby burdick » Thu Jan 15, 2004 11:31 am

Ethics

Enlightenment shows ethics an illusion,
while religion and ethics are kin.
This often leads to confusion.
Enlightenment shows ethics an illusion
and seems to come to this conclusion;
that ethics may be a mere human whim.
Enlightenment shows ethics an illusion.
while religion and ethics are kin.

hmmmm....light enough?
