Feeding The Birds

Post by bags123 » Mon Jan 13, 2014 10:22 am

Feeding The Birds

On a day that is dreary with moisture
As the clouds lighten slightly to grey
Every worm will emerge from it's cloister
Feeding birds that they meet on the way

And by evening what's left will lay scattered
On my driveway they'll start to decay
It's as if none of this really mattered
Since the worms would have died if they stayed

I prefer to keep an open mind,....but not so much that my brains fall out.- Carl Sagan

Here it's not so much the worms as the snails. They seem driven to migrate from the safety of the brush to the openness of the pavement by the slightest hint of moisture, and they also climb up the sheer walls of buildings. Then the sun comes out and they become dried husks, unable to achieve the logical escape back to the shade of the hedgerow. Perhaps the worms' purpose is to feed the birds, or enough of them get together to mate and create the next generation. I can't fathom their insistence on leaving the safety to migrate over the hard cement.

A good day for fishing. Free bait just lying around and the fish are hungry after a long sojourn under the frozen lake.
