Apache

Apache



Gaunt ribs betray the hunger
that his spirit would deny
as he tracks elusive quarry
beneath an angry sky

a wind that howls in unison
with predator and prey
steals what little warmth he has
and whirls it far away

back within a wikkiup
embattled by the snow
his wife and child lie starving
by a dying fires' glow

he clutches tight his rifle
ignores his freezing feet
and staggers ever onward
in search of game to eat

lips begin to mumble
a half-remembered prayer
to the unseen spirits
of the forest and the air

he is Apache, born and raised,
and like Apaches past
he struggles day by day so that
he will not be the last
