**Spera in Deo** Poem of the Week

Post by John DeBona » Sun Apr 17, 2011 8:04 pm

Winner: Poem of the Week: May 8, 2011
Image

Suddenly and out of nowhere
Thoughts draped in blackened robes
Lead me to the altar of bleeding faith
I carry the chalice with pall.
Heart pounding like a drum
Covered with rags of torment
Sweat beading my soul cries out
Deus, deus meus: quare tristis es, anima mea, et quare conturbas me?"

You capture the duality of faith and suffering, or perhaps faith is to suffer? I love your images upon the alter. My absolute favorite line was:
Lead me to the altar of bleeding faith
I will admit I could only read a few words of the Latin, but I like challenges.
After some searching I found the words in Psalm 42.

This is a great poem which (perhaps due to the Latin) felt like it may take place in the Middle Ages.

Kyrie eleison. Kyrie eleison. Kyrie eleison.

It is our inner daemons that drive us. Some will use them to create for the greater good, become poets, lovers and philanthropists. Others will allow themselves to slide into the darker seams of the fabric. The ultimate choice is theoretically ours, unless one believes in determinism.

Cheers!
