Oh my pearl
Oh my Pearl
Don’t you cry ….don’t you
Drink that brown bottle dry
Don’t you wish that Southern
Would Comfort you
Tonight
Oh my pearl
You have a hold on me
Don’t fold on me
Let that velvet voice
Lay me down, take me down
Take me now..
Oh!…. My Pearl
Drowned those sorrows
And those hung over tomorrows
No more barrowed love
Only flying doves
at the wake
my Pearl, my Janis
no more cryin’ no more tryin’
just a little bit harder
You, the lover, the fool, the martyr
Leave me lusting you in pain
My Janis, my Pearl, my ball and chain

Hi Queen,
What a great poem.
It is most excellent.
My mother grew up in a small town
close to, Port Author. She and Janis,
were friends in high school. On weekends
they would go to the back wood bars
in Louisiana. This is where she first begin
singing. They were under-age. In those days,
in Louisiana, age did not mean anything.
I am not sure it does, now.
I live in another town in, Texas.
When she left high school, she moved
to Austin and my mother lost touch with her.
Mom, has pictures of her and Janis when
they were in high school, and stories
about the crazy things, Janis, did.
I am going to copy your poem and picture
and send it to, Mom. She will love it.
I love it too.
I believe this is the best picture I have
seen of, Janis. It is sad her life ended so young,
and in such a tragic way. Many Rock Stars lifes
ended flying high or low, always too young.
In those days, many.......way too many.....
Beautiful and Sad poem....about a Pearl.....

Re: Oh my pearl
Hi Queen,
I called her this morning, and
gave her the address to this site.
She loves it. I have two Aunts who
live in Beaumont, Texas. This is about
fifteen miles from Port Author. They are
a little older than, Mom, and knew, Janis,
but not like, Mom. My Grandmother would
have died if she had known, Janis, and
Mom, were going to Louisiana. When I
wrote the back wood bars, I don't know
if you know what I meant. Back in the day,
there were the bars for only whites, and
the bars for Afro-Americans. The Afro-American
bars were not on the main roads. This is
where, Janis, developed her style of singing,
in Afro-American bars. The music was and
is get down "Blues," the best. When I was
a teen, I use to visit my Aunts in, Beaumont.
My friends and I would go to these bars.
It is like being on Bourbon Street in New Orleans,
the music is incredible. The bars are still in
the back woods, but everyone goes
to them, now. You have to know where
they are. Anyone, can get up and sing,
and there some "Great" singers, unknown,
but, "Great," who sing on the weekends.
This is where I learn to love
the "Blues, and Jazz." When I have some
time off from working, and I am at my Aunts,
I go to Louisiana, and listen to the music.
Louisiana, is like Vegas, now, but the music
will never change.
The pictures of Janis, and Mom, in high school,
does not look like this picture of, Janis. I am
not sure what the hair style was called,
short and Big. This is how they wore their
hair, then. It was the style.
Thank you, Queen, for writing this wonderful
poem. It brought back some wonderful memories
for my mother.
Let me know when your book is published.
I want a copy.
Thank you, Queen.....

Re: Oh my pearl
Lovely tribute to Janis ........... of whom I am a great fan... and whose music I play often while at the computer... you captured the essence of pain and the fabric of her tortured soul.... I like the interweaving of words from her lyrics/song titles... nicely done ....
I also have a story... about janis........
In May of 1968 Janis and Big Brother and the Holding Company played in San Jose, CA...
she was not very well known at the time ... known, yes ... but not as she would come to be.
I had gone to mostly hang out with friends ...and dance ...
So janis comes out ... out to a small stage with the band... not more than three feet high and one that you could stand right up to and touch the stage.... there were plenty of people but not a crowd......... so there I stood at the foot of the stage with janis singing her heart out ... hot and sweaty..sweat rolling down..... she was wearing a white/maybe cream colored large and loosely crocheted top and bottom ... she did have the good sence to wear underwear... on the bottom... but on the top ... nothing ... and of course you could see it all...............1968 ... burning bras and women's lib ............ lol...........
Anyway... I was mesmerized by her ... and her guts... her freedom... her feeling.... her graveled voice ... her throaty performance ... oozing sexuality....at the time not connecting the depth of her feeling with her actual pain...........too young I guess..
although... I stood right in front of her ... I do not recall her ever looking down at me ... but her only being in and with and all of her song/music/voice .............
...eventually I went back to my dancing .... that hippy type of twirling around with anyone in proximity ...
I wrote a poem about the night .... and posted it here once a long time ago....
... I'll PM it to you ... or email if you like..........
Thanks for posting ... being much younger than me .... curious as how you became a fan...
take care...

... and his words purge up and outward,
expelled and onward through desert dust swallowed,
sands he says that gorge on simple sensibilities.
And, now he spits fragments, grit, extended vowels and elongated syllables
over cracked lips. Their sounds fall
piling round his boots… ~ jeannerené

I enjoyed this poem very much. I saw Janis in Phoenix in the late 60's. It was one of the two best concerts I ever attended. I still listen to her music occasionally.
