NIGHTTIME SOUNDS
The owl’s voice, distant, insistent,
Calls into the night, in the absence of light,
Other than the moon, and clock.
Her quiet breath cools my neck as I check
The clock which hasn’t moved, its face grooved
By arms pressed in, no “tick”, no “tock”.
The window at my head is grayed
By the fog of my breath, distance of her death,
Unopened, holding her in.
My arm moves to stretch, to reach
As I turn from my silent scream, to dream
While I reach to her again.
The tree scratches and matches
The rhythm of the owl’s call, with the winds of fall,
Leaving dancing shadow images.
Shapes moving, fed by our bed
Cover’s disarray, lumped as if she still lay
Just beyond my dream’s fringes…
Concern fills my heart, as dry lips part
And I call upon scratcher upon my heart to depart,
And the owl of my soul to hush, to quiet down.
Yet those noises still echo where I face
The place her neck’s nape should be, draped
By my empty arms, and another lonely night’s sounds…
Calls into the night, in the absence of light,
Other than the moon, and clock.
Her quiet breath cools my neck as I check
The clock which hasn’t moved, its face grooved
By arms pressed in, no “tick”, no “tock”.
The window at my head is grayed
By the fog of my breath, distance of her death,
Unopened, holding her in.

Re: NIGHTTIME SOUNDS
May God be with you. I do not know the sorrow which your heart is in, but I have no doubt that God is preparing you for joy to come. Nights can be the hardest, we who have been in love understand this.... so know you are not alone. And by the way, wonderful poem, thank you so much for sharing this!
God Bless!

"A woman with the courage to step out into the unknown, risking temporary loneliness for a shot at lasting joy, is more than a "single." She's singular. Instead of defining herself by what she lacks - a relationship with a man - she defines herself by what she has: a relationship with God." ~from Dawn Eden's 'The Thrill of the Chaste'

Re: NIGHTTIME SOUNDS
Death my friend is but a sleep and a forgetting
I believe that true love transcends death
and you will meet again remembering
after you have taken your last breath.
I do not know How could I do
but I believe it to be true.

Re: NIGHTTIME SOUNDS
Thank you Mellen12 and Poetipiers for your kind words.
Monday, the 23rd, was the 7th anniversary of when my wife finally found peace and release from this world.
Acceptance has been hard and is still a difficult memory, yet the pain is numbed now thanks to being able to present these writings, and the kind comments from gentle hearts such as yours.

Hi brother Tom..this is soooooooo beautiful and so touching to the heart.
I felt so much love and emotion in this gem of a poem, and the loneliness so real.
You always have a way of capturing our attention and emotions when you write because
you write with truth and passion and love.
Miss you dear friend.....I pray God fills those lonely nights with angels to sing you to sleep.

Sometimes it's like that, I know...
One loses interest
in that
which bears no mystery,
And holds no promise...
in that
which bears no mystery,
And holds no promise...
