Lest Ye Forget (300 million towers)
Lest Ye Forget
(Three hundred Million Towers)
Look ye back yon
Over yesterday's shoulder
Do you still see the buildings?
In your mind's eye, do they still smolder?
Watch intently each jumper
One by one by one by one
Hast thou so soon forgotten
The smoke that blocked the sun?
Don't turn ye away thy frozen stare
Although the ashes fiercely burn
Although the tears roll freely down
Keep thy steady gaze, No! Don't you dare turn
Watch ye now! Look there!
See the bent and broken steel
Don't you dare turn away!
Let your gut churn, let your soul wretch and reel
Now turn just ever so slightly
Toward the first few weeks that follow
Listen ye now to eulogy after eulogy
Watch as six feet deep leaves you so shallow and hallow
Don't you dare turn away now! Watch!
As the mother screams out her unfathomable pain
Watch her son now! Watch his heart ripped
With the sinking recognition his father won't be home again
Watch ye, the fireman's firmly clinched jaw
And the tight fisted grip of the officer's grief
Yes! Turn ye and watch but do not stop thy walk
Thy strong steady forward gait you must keep
Hold your gaze but not your tears
Keep the vision seared deep in your mind's eye
For although her freedom was scarred
The healing wounds are proof she did not die!
Now turn ye and look ye forward
At the whole they made, a futile attempt to seal our fate
Two towers burned, yet 300 million rose up
Each one burning inside, standing tall straight and great

I've been fishing around on page 2, getting caught up. Gordy, I missed this piece when it was posted. This is outstanding.

<i>"And she told him how it was Forgall had gone to Emain, and had advised him to go and learn warriors’ feats, the way they two might not meet again. Then each of them promised to be true to the other till they would meet again, unless death should come between them, and they said farewell to one another, and Cuchulain turned towards Alban."</i> ~The Courting of Emer

Re: Lest Ye Forget (300 million towers)
A great write, this! Unfortunately the events of that day have become so politicized and wielded as a weapon of fear attain and maintain power that the numbers 09/11 are very close to becoming a cliche.
