I take the liberty of presenting this tale here. I think you might get some responses if readers don't have to link off the site. Hope you don't mind, Kada!

Wolf
by Brandy Todd

The horrid sound came again. His heart lurched into his throat as the bone-chilling screech pierced the night and sent shivers through his sweaty body. It could only be described as a cry of ultimate pain and anguish, like someone being burned by a hot branding iron or bones being broken while you watched. He knew about those types of things, he had been through a lot. But no one had ever sounded like this. The silence filled the space around him again, reminding him where he was. He decided that while the air was quiet and he still had what courage was left, he would seek out this tormented victim of what must be unspeakable torture. He looked about and searched for a passageway that might lead him to the helpless individual. The pitch darkness impaired his vision, but he caught a glimpse of a narrow hallway and made his way there.

He was stumbling through the empty corridor when he heard it again. This time it was louder and more distinct. It was the sound of a woman's scream mixed with the raging howl of a wolf. Terror froze his steps as it echoed throughout the walls of his skull and raped his senses. Guilt washed over him for allowing his fear to interrupt his search for the person, or whatever it was.

He moved on wearily with unsteady legs until he saw a flicker of light. He struggled toward what appeared to be a room with a torch just insidethe door. The flames danced on their perch forming grotesque figures on the walls and cast a thin yellow blanket on the hallway. He inched forward, slowly. His shaking hand reached out to grip the doorframe, unconsciously bracing him for what he feared he might find inside that room. His mind was trying to prepare him for every gruesome and disturbing scene he could possibly phathom. He allowed his feet to turn his body to the opening of the room.

The moment his feet were in place he heard the deep throaty growl and as his eyes settled to the center of the room his reason and logic and every sense of reality he had ever known fled him. With the impact of the screaming that had begun his guilt and courage abandoned him, leaving his fleeing instinct the dominating factor. The picture put before him was one that would rob his mind of its peacefulness and would fill his evenings with unforgettable nightmare, leaving him eternally sleepless. When the the rough edges of his initial shock wore down, his vision cleared of its cloud of fear, he was able to study what lay before him. He seemed to be paralyzed, he didn't know why he wasn't moving, running, it just seemed an impossible feat at the moment.
The horror never left him as he eyed the form of a young woman holding her abdomen and chest off the floor with her outstretched arms braced against the cold concrete. Her head slumped, chin resting on her chest, which was rising and falling with heavy uneven breaths. Her shiney, raven black hair hid her face from his view so he momentarily settled his gaze on the long leather overcoat draped over her bent legs. It wasn't until the pain crippled her that the true nature of what he had found was uncovered.

He could see the convulsions building. Her legs jerked spastically under the dark brown leather. Her body tensed as sounds of crackling and splintering bones came from her back. His stomache heaved when he heard a sickening pop, causing her head to snap back revealing a face contorted in agony. Screams ripping from her throat seemed to do nothing to ease the relentless torture. After it subsided he heard her whimper and cry, begging for and end. With another burst of piercing shrieks and crunching her legs straightened, displaying what should have been shapely human legs. In their place were what appeared to be animal legs covered with thick, wirey, black hair. The claws of the beast legs dug into the floor, scraping and scratching. The intruder's eyes drifted to the girl's face, she opened her eyes and found him staring at her. His heart began to race, the adrenaline made his head pound. His first reaction was to run, as he started to do, until he caught the pleading in her eyes. Between the pain and rage he saw the helplessness and innocence begging him to help her. But it lasted only a second before her primal animal instincts leapt forward. Her head lowered until she was peering at him through her eyebrows, her lips curled back into a snarl no beast alive could match. He noticed her teeth beginning to change size and shape. They grew longer and sharper, ending their growth when they had formed piercing points. Her eyes glowed with a devilish red, boring through him with a fierceness that would forever be etched into his memory.

I had started my own werewolf story and got stuck after chapter one (grin). That was over a year ago. Someday I will get back to it.

This one is a great start. No ideas for action as yet... maybe in a day or so. Sorry it got buried on the back pages of the prose forum.

You're welcome , ma'am. Looks like a sparse few come over to this forum to read these great tales. They seem to stay in the "adult" or "dark" places *grin*.

I didn't get to read it all, but try (if you didn't) to put in how he had been through all of that and why was he in the corridor in the first place?
