Nightingales

Post by David Monks » Sat Jun 20, 2009 2:28 pm

Nightingales

Philomela and her sisters
Have come again
To sing their dithyrambic songs
Among the branching almonds.
Their sweet ecstasies
Make the Muses sigh
With impotent envy,
As all Nature stills - to listen.

A veil of balmy velvet falls
Over a tremulous sky,
And chaste stars haste
To take their place
As the darkening evening air
Thrills with expectancy.

Thank you Moonflower. Kind words indeed. I think that once heard, the songs of the nightingale remain in the soul forever. Such beautiful music can never be described by mere words.

Sorry for the delay in expressin appreciation. I have been away since the last week of June.

David.

Beautiful poem and the emotions stirred by this twilight melody so perfectly caught.
Thanks. *angel
