Poem(s) of the Week: July 2, 2006
Ok. Only three nominations and only three votes. I'm going to close this and count the nominations and seconds as well as the votes, though they might be duplicated. Therefore, there are two "winners" this week.
Winner: Poem of the Week: July 2, 2006
Only Those That Write Remain
by Pope
So the Gods write words for fools to play
Upon this earth, we crawl this way and that.
As strung from threads, we trip and sway
And stumble on from day to day until, at last,
There comes away this mortal bind, this shapely clay.
They lay us there beneath the ground.
Never more to tell the sound,
To hide, to lie, to swim, to fly.
We cling to love, we hope, we try
And these thousand thousand things belie
That awful truth, to always die.
So short a time upon this earth
We spend our tears and feel the dearth of sight.
And breathe our breath and try to fight
Against the darkened death of light
As the night draws in and hides what might have been.
What we have seen throughout our time,
What we have read in word and rhyme
And held to truth that makes us mine is stripped away
And blown adrift with this final, perfect pain.
So sing your song as loud, as long as courage craves,
And hoard your words against the graves of those who went before.
For ever now and ever then enshrouds the hearts and minds of men
Immortality lies within, so seek it there and share and share
For only those that write remain.
Pope 06/06

The Country Estate
by heinzs
Inherited at long last, the deed passed,
my solitude finally at an end.
He will care for me or neglect me
I have had my share of good and bad masters.
The Ferrari in the garage remains silent,
unwilling to share his secrets.
I'll have to discover for myself
what my future holds for me.
I remember baking in the summer sun
a slight breeze wafting over me
and the sound of gulls high overhead.
I remember the smoke from the chimney
rising into the autumn sky
playing tag with the clouds.
I remember the children playing in the snow,
the impressions of “angels”, real and imagined
and long icicles dangling from the eaves
I remember robins and butterflies
vying for attention amidst the daisies
the brightly swirling colors blending into a single beauty.
He comes at last
walking up the path, a lady upon his arm
and there, following close behind
a boy of 8 with his dog!
How I have longed
for the patter of young toes
and the voices of children
to fill my emptiness with life.
I remember all the births and deaths -
generations that made me more than a house -
I welcome this chance to fulfill my dream
to be a "home".

Congrats, Pope and Heinz.
Entering the sanctuary of my mind may lead to perils of unknown magnitude.......... hold on and embrace the ride. Feel the tolls as we pass from existance into my sought domain of twisted reality. -negatv: 5/05-
If I changed anything I have done in my life I wouldn't be me. Personally, I kinda like me. I'm an asshole, but I'm my kind of asshole.
Friends are what help me guide myself through life. I just have to find the right direction first. -negatv- 10/06

Thank you very much everyone, I am very pleased, not so much for the plaudit (though this is of course very welcome) but more for the sticky that accompanies it, as all Poets i'm sure, we crave to be read and the more notice we gain for our work the happier we are. Thank you.
Hello Heinzs, I find myself in excellent company, your poem was an fine piece of work.

Thanks Pope... I may not comment often, but I'd like you to know, publicly, that I truly admire the calibre and quality of your topics.
