A Sorrow That Leaves You Breathless
By Therese MacCallum
Tears are caught
in the lines of a treble clef
while the soft music,
poisoned with sorrow,
plays gently in the background
An insignificant drop of dew
rests on the petals of a rose
Soaking into the softness
But recoiling from the sharpness
that the rose represents
A start of a new day
A day without you
An antique clock
resting under a blanket of dust
Its hand still moving slowly
around and around
Counting the dead hours
since that coffin was carved
The edge of the tinsel rips
as the ornaments idly watch
the chaos
The tips of the star start to bend
The neglected decoration melts
It can no longer wait for you
The last tear drop falls into
a puddle of hope
The ripples spread
letting each person have
one small taste
