No Battle's Ever Over Till It's Done (Sonnet)

No Battle's Ever Over Till It's Done

The Captain stood surrounded by his men
Announcing that the battle had been won
Despite the bloody slaughter that had been
Not one of them had given ground, or run

Survivors were just glad the fightings through
The air they breathed felt pure, almost refined
No enemies remained within their view
The killing stopped, as if it all were timed

Then suddenly an angry fussillade
From higher ground. Surrounding them in fire
No one avoided death within the squad
Their Captain it turned out had been a liar.

Announcing that the battle had been won
No battle's ever over till it's done.
