The Light Leaves Only Evening's Grace- A Villanelle

Post by bags123 » Mon Aug 16, 2010 6:15 am

The Light Leaves Only Evening's Grace

The light leaves only evening's grace,
and neon, bright lit, sidewalks there
Diminished since it's been replaced

on old facades without a trace,
as darkness warns one to beware
The light leaves only evening's grace

Inside a crowd with no one's face
Without bright eyes that really care
Diminished since they've been replaced

By characters from this dark space
Escaping from their smokey lairs
The light leaves only evening's grace

but while I walk this dark embrace
will sooth my mood, and slow my cares
Diminished since they've been replaced

with other thoughts that interlace,
as I approach the night aware
The light leaves only evening's grace
Diminished when it's been replaced

wow - I really like this piece bags... I had to read it 3 times and I still don't think I got everything I can out of it. Great write. I am going to have to go do some research on villanelles. I really like the form and may experiment with it after reading some more about it.

Thanks Jady. I find this form tediously hard to write,...I've only written one other,...but I always enjoy reading them. There's something about the repetition, and transpositioning of certain lines that gives them a feel all their own.

reading about it - it seems as if it might be rather difficult to wirte.... but it appears that the most difficult part is discovering the main couplet that the poem will be based around. After discovering that it seems as if it would become much easier to flow through and put a strong impact into the main idea of the piece. I will be experimenting and let you know if I also find it tedious. Once again though - very well written - bravo!

I do not know of any poets who write many vilanelles, but most will try one or two. It is a very powerful poetic form.

Looks like much that I wish to say has been said ...and said well too! Interesting & maybe I will turn to research Villanelle on a night that seems to wait for dawn and I can atleast blame bags for the discomfort.  BeeJay
