Symptomatic Of
I remember when my mother laughed
The room lit up in lights
Like those upon a Christmas tree
that wink, and shine so bright
Contagious,..like the atmosphere,
but symptomatic of
a warm embrace, or long backrub,
from someone that you love.
This December I saw mother cry
She had been working nights
to pay her bills, and feed her cat,
and keep on all her lights.
Outrageous it can happen here
but symptomatic of
a bitter taste, or being shoved
by someone with a club.

Re: Symptomatic Of
The contrast of the two stanzas in this piece work exceedingly well together. The fond and happy memories of your mother in the first makes you feel more deeply outraged at the second. How sad that her smile has faded to tears in these times of hardship, as it has for so many. This piece speaks to a world audience, anyone who has ever seen their mother broken, even just a little, can easily connect with this and feel with and for the writer. Great write. Thank you for sharing.
