To My Daughters

Post by SamIAm » Mon Dec 12, 2011 1:32 pm

Your little smiles
Petite, warm hands
You look up at me
With eyes that pronounce me
A hero

Soft, gentle voices
Sometimes laugh
Sometimes cry
But always with a love
I did not earn

And here
In my hands
I hold your hearts
I hold a mass of your joy
In these trembling old hands
I hold the power
To comfort
Or to cause pain

I wake
Only for you
I sleep
To dream of your faces
I would suffer
A million stabbings
A thousand deaths
To spare you
A fraction of pain
A slip of a single tear

So many were the times
I spoke the words
That I would die for you
But it is, I’ve found
A sweeter breathing
A more exquisite waking up
That for you
I choose to live
