Unexpected Re-visitation

Unexpected Re-visitation

The original intent was simple
A quick hello, how are you?
Then I’d be gone, awaiting her reply
But something caught me, for some reason I found myself hesitating
Then there was the hotlink
To some familiar form that I had no way of know
But all the same I knew it was you…

So I sat and I read, every letter of print pouring from the screen
Full color photographs taken in a pixel at a time in shock
You look much happier now with your sun baked skin and beach bum bravado

I wish I could explain or even truly know
What caused you to leave and why I never returned your calls
But here, once again, you are
Splayed out before me with adventurous memories flooding back in torrents
And, I’m sure, a million new stories I’ve never known

Three AM drunken missions towards home only to be picked up before we got halfway there
Ten dollar a piece white russians in the posh downtown bistro
While the dark skinned woman wailed away on her worn acoustic guitar like a modern day harpy
I still have the tape we made, haven’t listened to it in awhile, but its there still the same
Holding moments with us deep in discussion and shared laughter over to many drinks
And do you remember the game of our own design?
I’ll begin with a lyric and the others follow until a bobbled tongue erupted with cries of DRINK!!
Unloading semi trailers full of objects designed to bring children joy
Having to run from the truck with the sheer terror that I would spill my partially digested alcoholic contents
All over the polished linoleum a mere three hours before the stores doors opened again

All these memories I had pushed back and hidden away
But one thing you once told me has always rung true, adhering itself to the back of my mind
“If you see the best in me, then I’ll see the best in you.”
So now I find myself, giving freely of my cigarettes and change to all those who ask
If for nothing more than a bit of interesting conversation to break away from the norm
To find one more soul, to once again be well met

Truth be told I did step out through the revolving doors of your life
But I see now that I merely needed to have a smoke
“What’s in store for me in the direction I don’t take?”
