At Least This

I owe you at least this
Not excuses or reasons why not
more remembrance of why
That you made me smile was enough
that you kissed me with a passion long since forgotten
a drug under other circumstance I could never tire of
Yet you chose to ignore my honesty, my truth
Floating on the rarefied air romance
down a dead end street littered with beautiful memories
A beach of ghosts were only we survived
a clear aqua sea that swallowed us whole
wrapping us in its warm embrace
A clear moonlit sky whose stars looked down with jealous eyes
Unable to match the sparkle in yours
I will always remember us happy
in those afternoons of jigsaw arms and legs
the sticky heat of bare flesh binding us
we’d part like stamps from a steamed envelope
your eyes meeting mine in mutual adoration
where we’d stop and look, just look, nothing more
And those kisses, elbows resting on marble
no touching, just the faintest brush of hungry lips
a breath between us

And more
The washing away of that afternoon heat
soap filled moments, aqua kisses as our bodies
meshed once more in a slippery dance more sensual
than anything I have ever known

And there it ends
home, back to the reality of my honesty, my truth
The carefree you looking out from behind Grandma’s eyes
Too old you once said
to old to be doing this
too old to be acting this way
I say
Too young to be buried by Grandma’s hands
