Parting

You know I just wouldn't be human if I didn't try and hold your hand as it disintegrated from the light of a thousand suns somewhere above Hiroshima. Or kiss the tears from your cheeks in Iraq, like the sweat from your brow in Zimbabwe. It isn't in me not to try and lift the rubble crushing you in Gaza or hide you in Rwanda. Like a last hug in a building in New York or the water we shared in Afghanistan. More than the blood we mixed in Flanders or the sandy beach we trod in Normandy.

Longer than the fires burned in Dresden or Soweto. I won't let go of your hand.

Time is the natural enemy of love.

It was the fires of Dresden that severed
The earthly ties between us last time.
And the time before it…
was it in New York
During the disaster, or the dawn of the
Ice Age where all other animals witnessed
A similar death?

Our love is like time
Folding in on itself.

All I know is now.

Now, we are scientists
Laying death to romance because
“May the lord do so to me, and more else,
If anything but death parts you and me”
Does not exist
In the nucleotide sequence of
Our love where my A wants to
Meet with your G because
We are all too inglorious
Flesh laid upon this Earth
By no creator.

But, I’ll always wonder where you are.

It seems even in dreaming that it is you
- always-
Beyond our waking thoughts,
Beyond the city of Man
And into the city of God,
Where my-our-love is…
The fat lady behind
the sound.

This is the city of men.
One day here and the next day
Gone, dispersed, but the evil in
No way has disappeared just like
How Love is no fine gold in a bed
Of rocks on a sieve
But wine and blood
and Flesh and spirit
that I drink of you
refilled in my cup.
Again
And
Again
And again.
I will drink you
In whatever form
You choose
To make yourself
Known as.

And it just isn’t in me
To lay us out for science
To stop reading our palms
For signs and putting
Charms on your cell phone
In hope that our stars will
Align in this lifetime.

And it isn’t in me not to wish
that there be a part of us
Beyond the fires of Dresden
And rubble of Gaza.

More than that
I do not wish
To let go of your hand.
