S-h-h-h, if you listen quietly,
You can hear the breath,
In the cold journey nightly
Down the memories of before death,
Reminding you how silent life is,
How important sounds are hid
From a heart with nothing to miss
And only a false vision of bliss ahead.

S-h-h-h, breathe softly now and you’ll
Hear sounds you heard once before,
While the path you walked narrowed until
Only room for one was needed, leading to a door
That opens to absent greetings,
Silent questions of where you were,
Inaudible shouts of joy of your giving
Rewarded only by kisses of silence to endure.

S-h-h-h, if patient you may even catch
The rustling sound of the sheets
Pulled for warmth with a cold breath’s touch,
And within the settling breath, between heart beats
Long lost to a day of bitter cold,
The rumble and rattle of the future today,
When the path, now narrowly old,
Began to shrink to your heart and the sounds went away….

Tom I was feeling this way just the other day and I'm sure I heard my mothers voice telling me in that sweet voice of hers just how to make my pie crust perfect...I know this is not about mothers but I can relate in some small way with you ..this is a supberb poem..well written and full of emotion as I read it...Bless you dear heart as always...your friend and Sister Debbie

I know these feelings only too well. Your poem spoke to me as a reminder of those feelings. And the memories persist. I like how you stated this, there is a saddness and beauty in your words.

An outstanding poem Tom and very deep, stirring emotions and I can relate to your great phrasing.
What really touched me in addition is the "shhh", for I can still hear it from my parents when I am sad with memories for they have long left this world and even my special Sundays, calm and peaceful I call them

Angel, for you also my gratitude for the understanding. Even now, in the silence of the sleeping hours, I can almost hear her breath in my ears, warming the cold air...anyway, thanks to all.
