Night and Day
1. Night
They went too far on their initial date,
a night that started over drinks and dinner,
and, though she sort of flirted while they ate,
he never thought, In minutes, I'll be in her.
He hadn't asked her out with the intent
of winding up, at midnight, in her bed,
but all the oysters, beer, and shared consent
determined where they’d, after dinner, head.
Her new apartment house, a block away,
rose seven stories high, with mirrored glass.
"It's like a phallic symbol on display,"
he'd teased her leadingly, and made a pass.
She kissed him back. Relieved he'd not upset her,
he said, "The food was good, but this is better."
2. Day
He slept the night away, and woke at dawn,
thinking, Is this the standard one-night stand?
The sun was climbing, but the shades were drawn,
and so he laid there in the dark, and planned
how he'd address the night's activity.
Because he barely knew her, he considered
how she’d react to “It’s not you. It’s me.”
Would she accept that, or become embittered
and cause a scene until he fled the loft?
She’s perfect, though, he thought, then stroked her hair.
To wake her up, he cleared his throat and coughed,
prepared to ask where they would go from there.
She stirred, and purred “I like you, Ray, ” then gave
a wink. The problem was, his name was Dave.
