Gray Days

Post by Lil Gray » Wed Aug 06, 2003 8:25 am

<a name="#ninety"> Gray Days </a>

Fog caresses the morn
With icy fingers
Reluctant
To let loose its grasp

In the distance
Thunder mumbles promises
Of rain-dark skies
Broodingly soothing

Mind Knew...

Post by Lil Gray » Mon Aug 18, 2003 1:19 am

<a name="#ninety one"> Mind Knew... </a>

Echo, be still!
Haunt me not with your reminders
Those doors were closed as softly
As gently
As could be managed
Yet the barely discernible “click” of the hasp
Ever grows into thunderous crescendo

Heart, be not broken!
Cease your torturous, limping pulsations
Shackles which once bound you
Lie in a quickly rusting heap
Yet you stumble along
Each beat a struggle

Soul, feel not empty!
Mourn not the loss
Of that which did nothing but drain

You weren’t listening!
Not listening as Mind clearly
Logically
Explained it…
That sometimes,
The only alternative
Is to let go
Let go of the blade that cuts so deeply
And close the emotional door through which
It’s repeatedly plunged its razor’s whet

Mind knew
The next cut would have been fatal

This letting go merely feels like it’s going to be…

Echo, be silent…

<a name="#001">I Take it Back!!</a>

She’s taking back her heart
Rescuing the tattered
Remnants
From betwixt
Behemoth
Cogs of corporate
Indifference

She’s taking back her soul
No more to be tethered
Into service
By their…ideals(?)
Their perceptions of
Success

She’s taking back her self
Her light
Her breath
Her frailty
Her reality
Her strength
Her belief

That human kind…
Is not an oxymoron

<a name="#002">Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep</a>

Faces, places, endless scenes
Hurtling through inner-space
A cache of fleeting images
Strive to win the inner-race

Sounds, half-heard and half-perceived
Break the silence, just the same
Peeper’s call becomes a din
Thunderous heartbeat stakes its claim

Feel of floating; temporary
Sudden drop dispels the calm
Tossing, turning once again
In search of slumber’s soothing balm

Perfect clothing
In perfect style…

Beauty, poise and grace abound
No “blended” whiskeys to be found
It’s single-malt or none at all
And if the conversation stalls
They’re armed with topics deemed to be
…“appropriate”
…avoiding controversy…

(Heaven forbid!)

All dressed up to go dancing…

(around the issues)

Again…

It lingers about him
Palpable, yet
Unable to be touched
It whispers sweet nothings to him
Yet he can’t quite make out
The words
It rests in his palm
Yet as he holds it
It disintegrates as
A page reduced to ash
Still bearing form and script
Yet delicate beyond imagination

He struggles to own it
Feel it
Know it…

When he should be giving himself to it
Allowing it to fill and
Know him

‘Tis not that happiness is just out of reach…

…It is he…

Perception…
Sculpts
Realities
Perspective…
Chiseling
Finer details
Situation…
Sands smooth
The edges

“It’s the end of the world!”
“My life is ruined!”

She couldn’t get concert tickets
He went too far and really hurt her this time
(she doesn’t seem to be breathing…)
That boy never called
He gambled away the last of his retirement
They’re losing their house
Dad’s dying of cancer
She watches society descend
Into a whirlpool of greed
And apathy
The Angels lost
We’re at war…

Sculptures fashioned
Stand
Subject to outward critique
By misaligned acuities

But perhaps the inner dimensions
Of “Living Hell”
…”feel” the same…

Perception
Sculpts
Reality…

<a name="#006">Resuscitation</a>

Love watches

Half his years
Spent carting boulders
To dam rushing waters
Of life’s river
To harness…capture

Love watches

He smiles; triumphant
As pool grows ever deeper
But still he toils

Love waits

Satisfaction, finally
A time to rest
To bathe in this
Culmination
Of endless labor

He slips beneath the surface
Hopelessly weighed down
By the material accumulations
That once seemed so necessary

Love reaches

Taking her hand
He allows her to lead him
Back into the currents
Sweeping away the burdens
Washing him clean

Love saves

<a name="#007">Sting</a>

Leaving behind the demon
Wrenching from its grasp
Pausing, briefly, to ponder
Will the talons be missed?
So accustomed to their grip
A sort of strange comfort
In the agony
Imparted
And what of the wounds?
The pain?
Is that now such a part
Of the whole
That healing could mean
Death?

(*smile)

“Where is thy sting…”

<a name="#008">"Remote"</a>

I want to shriek
Scream until my lungs explode
As society welcomes this monster
With open arms
Inviting the beast into their homes
To share evenings with them
With their innocent children
Do they set a place for it at their tables?
Oh, forgive me.
I quite forgot.
It’s no longer important to have dinner together
To gather family ‘round the table
Communicating as they share sustenance
It is only important to make room
For the insidious, vile creature
Consuming our humanity
Like a great
Sucking
Black hole.
It is only necessary to make time
For this demon
That tells us
It’s okay to deceive
It’s okay to lie, cheat, steal and connive
It’s okay to coldly
Bitterly
Insult
With the intent to hurt
That’s “entertainment”
Don’t you know?
Adds a whole new understanding
Of why it’s called the
“Remote”

Cold
Unaffected
Inhuman

All in the palm of your hand…

DISCLAIMER: This is a vent, folks! If you're offended, I apologize from the bottom of my heart. It is certainly never my intention to hurt anyone. I just needed to get this off of my chest.

Peace and all good.

<a name="#009">Growing...</a>

I saw true love today
An elderly couple
Perusing row upon row
Of brightly colored blooms
Pansies and snapdragons
Dahlias and impatiens
Catching up at the violas
I greeted them
Offered any service I could be
Commented on the delicate
Beauty
Of the sunny
Golden yellows…
A loving smile passed between them
And they shared a story
Last year, they explained
The entire yard was bedecked in
The golden yellows
In honor of their Golden Anniversary
Fifty years passed
As husband and wife
Lovers and friends
Fifty years of “better and worse”
Fifty years of real life
Laughter
Tears
And everything between
Their gentle regard of one another
The way they filled their flats together
Sharing soft murmurs and smiles
It was clear they’d eagerly share fifty more years
If Time allowed

The world is filled with worthy role models
Who go unnoticed

I saw true love today
In the sweet faces
Of an elderly couple

I saw true love today
And I long to plant with him
A yard full of sunny golden-yellow violas…

“Basidiomycetes”
Biology offers
Underground
Intricate web of mycelium
Grows outward
From center
Producing, at its edges
Its “fruit”
Appearing topside
In near-perfect circles…

“Fairy Circles”
Superstition and whimsy counter
‘Tis the path danced by pixies
Beneath magical moonlight
To melody of summer’s breeze
And harmony of impish giggles

Smiling
Casting science aside
And cares to the wind
She gives a gleeful pirouette
In child-like wonderment

And puts off the mowing
For another day

With gentlest caress

Morning’s dew, feeling its own demise

Casting diamond’s sparkle

Mother Earth revels
As bird-song provides chorus
For Her own song of daily rebirth…

<a name="#012">Best Wishes</a>

To those that I love
I could wish nothing finer
Than the joy to be found
In life’s simple pleasures

A juvenile giggle-fit
Over some silly something
A breath-taking sunset
Quiet moments to treasure

The song to be heard
In a babbling brook
The sense of self-worth
In a day of hard work

The soul-soothing crackle
Of a fire in the hearth
The way doggy kisses
Serve to banish the hurt

The smell of bread baking
Snowflakes on your cheeks
A peaceful night’s slumber
When long day is done

A warm hand to hold
Embraces galore
A friend and a lover
Wrapped all into one

<a name="#013">The Diner on Route 6</a>

On the other side of this row of windows
A woman wearing an immaculately tailored suit
Chatters incessantly into her cell phone
I do not hear the click of her heels
On marble steps
I do not hear the agitation in her voice
It is apparent, though
I see the gestures
The rigidity of posture
The deliberate and harried pointing
Of remote – unlocking the doors of her Benz

I want to step outside
Call to her across the street
To step inside…to a simpler time
Where my endless cup of morning coffee
Dispels morning’s chill
Where the juke box plays
For the Bobbie-Soxer in us all
Where the pleasant faced young waitress
Trades morning pleasantries (and perhaps the “hubbub”)
With the old gent perched on stainless stool
At sparkling counter

Enter Everett…whom waitresses and patrons alike
Greet by name

Yes…I want to invite her inside
I want to invite them all inside

No mixed greens salad with light dressing on the side
Mineral water
And another valium for dessert…

We’ll have the Blue Plate!
Sausage and cheese omelet
Toasted home-baked bread
Coffee that could peel the paint…

And a slice of Americana
A la mode…

<a name="#014">Same Old Story...Same Old Song and Dance</a>

Do you ever tire
Of hearing your own incessant whine?
Rising above any intelligible conversation
Of which you might be capable…

Do you ever yearn
To hear something pass your lips
But your own pathetic sob stories
And cries of injustice….

Can you not hear
The chant-like quality of your insipid griping?
Mind-numbing monotone
As expressions glaze around you,
When you begin?

You think we don’t care
Not the case, at all…
‘Tis only that we’ve heard it all before
And we’re tired
Tired of offering a word of comfort
A helping hand
Tired of trying to help you realize
The tools of repair
Rest in your own hands

But it’s the tools of destruction
You favor
Building
Sanding
Polishing to a mirror-like finish
That comfy little shell
Of “Poor Me”…

<a name="#015">Center of the Universe: Take 2</a>

Narcissistic incantations
Egocentric lamentations
Demanding that all those around
Take notice
No delay!

Caught up in your pulchritude
Delivery with attitude
You stamp your feet in protest as
The spotlight
Fades away.

Certain that the world exists
To serve your selfish ego-fits
Your tiresome ramblings ramble on
With numbing
Constancy

Confronted with the “bigger picture”
You roll your eyes at dullish lecture
Still, one day you’ll have to learn that
Life’s not your
Fantasy

So take these words of sage advice
Some day, you’ll pay a larger price
For demanding that the world cease
When you step
Into view

For if the spotlight’s yours, alone
You’d better hope no tiny stone
Will trip you up for all to see
Revealing
What is true

The world was here before your birth
And when you’re gone, this Mother Earth
Will continue to revolve and
Morning sun will
Rise anew

And memories of your grand facade
Will fade and garner no more laud
If “cameo appearances”
Are all that’s left
By you...

Earth’s sun gently wraps herself
In lavenders and crimson
Making graceful exit

Dusk sings of her splendor
Through voices of peepers
And hushed evening breezes

O’er the meadows,
Evening draws her cloak
Its velvet adorned in sparkling jewels

Time stands in awe
For a split-second

Suspended

In appreciation of this one
Perfect
Moment of solace

Then sorrowfully marches onward
To follow the sun
‘Cross the horizon…

Imagine, if you will
Such misery

So reviled by one’s own self
So insecure
That only in belittling others
Can any shred of self-worth
Be found
Only cruel dismissal
Of another's merits
Can make it bearable
To wear one’s own skin

And in realization…
Suddenly that which evoked anger
In caring soul
That which brought resentment
Injury and insult…
Brings only feelings of
Pity

Source considered…
Pain is still felt

But with direction
Altered accordingly

Fragile
Impressionable
Yet strong and self-certain
Half a girl
Yet, indeed, a woman
Caught in that purgatory of
Becoming
Still held fast by
Caring
But at times, overbearing
Hands
Searching for self
And for answers to questions
We’d all like to believe
She’s too young to ask…

Feelings of helplessness
Overwhelm me
As she turns to me for advice
Who am I to give mine?
But what would I be
To turn her away?
I remember the age well
(all too well)
To listen to her parents, though
It seems they’ve forgotten completely
Though we’re the same age
Perhaps if I was a parent, myself
I’d have that luxury of forgetfulness
Not to relive that struggle
And empathize
Rather than taking that imperiously higher ground
And telling her she still has much to learn
That she’s “too young”
To feel what she thinks she’s feeling

Trying my best to point out
Both sides
Of the issues
I give all I have
In friendship
And hope with everything inside of me
For the best for her, always

Yet still…I know

Some lessons are only learned
By stumbling
And making the decision
To pick oneself up again…

Soil, moist and warm

A soul-cleansing stroll
Delighting in “Flower Power”
Sending soul’s rhythms
Back into cadence

<a name="#021">Not Just Words</a>

I search within
Heart, mind, and soul
To find the words
Knowing that if I found eloquence
To astound the ages
It would be still
Not enough

Fifteen years
Times both trying
And exultant
Good days
Bad days
And everything in between

And today to look at you
My partner, lover and friend
My shoulder to lean on
My inspiration
Both my hero and my biggest fan
My comic relief and my straight-man
My Love…

After all these years

The only words that come...

“I do”

Yesterday
Today
And tomorrow
With deepest of love
Friendship
Respect and gratitude

“I do”…

*This humble offering dedicated to my wonderful husband, Tom, with whom tomorrow I will celebrate our fifteen year wedding annivesary.*
