This was a gift to my nephew for his birthday. Just wanted to share it with others...

Sonnet To Mr. Patrick W. Bailey
by
Uncle Patrick M. Bailey

Patrick, your name is no less than perfect!
And we two must guard against us flaunting
an appellation which boasts intellect
by its definition. For it's daunting
to others to know of the patrician,
gifts which by our mere label makes us heir!
Names, names, names! We laugh at the suggestion,
of course, that our name makes us the most fair
among all those we see each day in our lives:
friends, strangers or those whose visits are rare.
So we realize it comes as no surprise -
It does not matter what names others choose,
for your "good" name is yours to keep or lose.

Bartender

I would serve you a drink
mixed with friends and good times,
and I would mix another
again and again
with a twist of rhyme
and splashes of verse,
but I'm afraid
you'd drink it
too fast!

Time With You
by Pat Bailey

Time with you is a gift,
each hour is a joy,
each minute memorable,
each second is a heart beat,
and each moment is precious.
I thank God that time is eternal.

Traffic

Traffic
by

I came by
something curious today -
I was halted
at an intersection
with traffic signs for each way.
North and South were to stop
while East and West were to yield.
Most complied to yield to a stop,
others stopped so others could yield.
Stuck
with all the stopping and yielding,
I chose to hop
across the curb
driving into
and cutting through a field.
I made it to the next road
and thought about the four way trap
of compliance with a choice.
Who put the signs there
we may never know,
but I know
I never voted yes or no...
Oh, What we do to ourselves
when we let others direct the flow.

Night Rain's Mission

Post by patbly » Thu Nov 14, 2002 9:36 pm

Night Rain's Mission
by Pat Bailey

After a night's rain
the asphalt sparkles
with oil based puddles
sparkling with street light
reflections that splash
as the wheels roll through
with a rhythm of
front wheels: bump, splash, bump
back wheels: splash, bump, splash
and each wheel has its
own moment where its
heard and followed by
another moment
bump, splash, splash, splash, bump,
splash, bump, bump, splash, bump
with doppler rhythm
all the wheels pass by
my house and I hear
them quietly fade
as their hypnotic
trance lulls me into
a sleep as I sense
the presence of each
individual car
passing by my house
on the dimly lit street
where light dances
on small lakes and streams
made to cleanse the street -
with each splash, bump, splash,
with each bump, splash, bump
over the pothole
shore lines, the water
flows to wash the street.

Sonnet of Ava

Post by patbly » Sat Nov 16, 2002 6:35 am

Sonnet of Ava
by Pat Bailey

Ava, baby. Ava, our child . You are
our love in the living flesh. Oh, Ava,
cry when you need us. Whether near or far,
we'll hear you wherever you are, Ava!
There will be no labor we can’t endure,
for the precious gift of Ava from Him,
and our journey is beginning with your
future which sheds light on all that is dim.
Like others before you, you’ll stand and walk
and fall and walk and learn and grow and live
on your own…live on your own? Let’s not talk
yet of what will be nor dwell on “what if.”
There’s time for the future, but for today,
moments with Ava will not slip away.
