MY FRIEND

I saw a shadow once
And thought
“I know you, you’re my friend….”
And the shadow evaporated…

The seasons turned and clouds formed
Shapeless and shaped, light and dark
And I looked upon one of distinction
And thought
“I know you, you’re my friend…”
As my reach found tendrils of mist… nothingness.

The Sun rose and set countless times
The moon coming and going, fat and full and
Thin crested without a smile…

Then, while in a quite reverie, lost
To things I never knew, so could never find,
A hand touched my shoulder…
I turned to see a smile in another’s eyes…

“I don’t know you” I spoke uncertainly
“You will” he whispered, knowingly…

He then offered to walk
With nothing left for me, I agreed…
He then offered to talk,
Quietly,
Patiently...
And the road began to open as,
With his hand on my shoulder, we started our trail…

I found my friend
In a proffered smile,
A considerate touch,
A hand to help hold
My leash of loneliness…
A hand to help unbind it.

I can relate to the grasping at shadows... In the end you may be right that it is we who must be found.
