Colorful Debris ( A Christmas Sonnet)

Colorful Debris (A Christmas Sonnet)

My idle desk lies strewn with Christmas cards
All unreplied to by my wretched pen
Consorting with my fleeting disregard,
For people who I'll rarely see again.

I know I should feel guilty, but I can't
Consolidate my need to buy some stamps
To send a witty wish back to my aunt,
Or cousin Claude, who just had breast implants

And next year may they send out fewer still
Perfunctory intrusions through the mail
I've lost the discipline of my goodwill
To answer all these greetings growing stale

Accumulating where they shouldn't be
Around my desk like colorful debris
I prefer to keep an open mind,....but not so much that my brains fall out.- Carl Sagan
Your brain is like an umbrella. It only works when it's open- Someone Smart

When my daughter had a kidney transplant I decided to donate to kidney research instead of buying christmas cards.
I have never regretted that decision at least the cash goes to a worthy cause instead of ending up in a wastebin.
