The Raver
Once upon a login query, while i
Pondered pages of poetry
And many a quaint and curious volume
of poetic store
While I posted, smileys toasting
Suddenly there came a posting
As if someone was boasting, posting
on my pixelled door
'Tis some jun'r member, I muttered
Posting on my pixelled door
Only this and nothing more
Ah! Distinctly I remember, ‘twas the words of
A dissenter
And each separate crying phrase fraught
With anger ‘bout the war
Eagerly I wished he’d cease, but he
Had more to release
About Iraq and even peace
Peace, if we would ignore
He said, all we had to do
Was just to ignore
And there would be no war
And the sharpened strong and stinging verses
Presidential curses
Filled with—instilled with fanatic
Fervor ‘gainst the war
So now to still the beating of my
Heart I stood repeating
Tis some jun’r member’s premier post
On my pixelled door
Some eager junior member’s debut post
On my pixelled door
This it is and nothing more
Presently my hand awoke
With many hurried keyboard strokes
“sir”, said I “ or madame, truly your
Opinions I abhor
But, fact is, I was reading and I
Was not believing
And so maybe I am needing
Needing on my pixelled door
An explanation from you”
Said I, “ on my pixelled door”
Pressing send on my keyboard
Deep into the screen I starred, long I
Sat there confused, scared
Troubled, thinking thoughts that shook
My soul straight to the core
But the screen did not flicker, the not-
Knowing left me sicker
And the only words there floating upon
My eyes were, “ just ignore”
This I whispered and an echo murmured
Back the word “ignore”
Merely this and nothing more
Back to the front of Poetry Pages, trying
To control all my rages
Soon again I saw a posting somewhat
Longer than before
“Surely’” I said, “That is
Someone with a little more sense
Let me see, then, who it is and
This poem I’ll explore
“Tis some rhyme and nothing more
Open here I clicked the clicker, when
Without a flash or flicker
Up popped another raving just like
I spoke of before
Not the least of sense made he; not a
Rhyme or reason could I see
But his mind he spoke boldly, printed
On my pixelled door
Printed below my poster of “Dubya” just
Above my pixelled door
Printed he, “ We should just ignore”
Then these angry words beguiling my sad
Fancy into smiling
By the naïve and absurd thoughts I
Thought immature
“Though from thy point ye never waiver
Ye seem just an attention craver
Spewing spin, impatient raver
Of your opinions you are sure
Tell me what thy game is and what
Makes you so sure
Posts the raver, “just ignore”
Much I marveled this poets prose, as
He described the world he knows
Though his viewpoint was well meaning
Was well off the mark for sure
For on most things were we disagreeing
I had trouble seeing
Eye to eye with this other human beings words
On my pixelled door
Words like these below the postered Bush
Above my pixelled door
Especially things like, “just ignore”
But the raver kept on posting, below the
Postered Bush he’s boasting
That one phrase as if his soul in that
One phrase he did outpour
Nothing further did he utter, on this one
Point, stuck, he stuttered
Till I scarcely more than muttered
“Other poets have left before”
On the morrow he will leave me, as many
Others have left before
Up popped the words “just ignore”
Startled at the stillness broken by
A reply so crappily spoken
“Doubtless,” typed I, “what you utter is
Only, your only stock and store
Caught from some biased professor who’s liberal
Leftist hate-filled lecture
Filled your brain with brain washed banter ‘til
His views ‘came stock and store
Till the dirges of this dope, “came
Your stock in store
Only just “just ignore”
As I read the raver’s spin, I couldn’t
Contain a reluctant grin
Straight I wheeled a cushioned seat in
Front of Bush and pixelled door
Then upon the velvet sinking, I betook
Myself to linking
‘puter to ‘puter, thinking what his
Ominous words implore
What his rhetorical written
Ranting and ominous words implore
When he posted, “just ignore”
There I sat alone for hours, wond’rn if
He’d forgot the towers
And how they sat crumbled and flat, all burned
Up on the cities floor
These things, began I to contemplate, how could
He forget Kuwait
I came to dread this persons writing’s as the
Poetry pages I would pore
But this persons dreadful writings, at times
I seem somehow drawn to pore
Somehow I must just ignore
Then, I thought, his posts came quicker
How often he would click his clicker
Till the time came when his entries
I couldn’t wait to explore
“Wretch”, I cried, “my God who has
Sent thee! Unkind stranger who sent thee!
Tell me! Tell me! Delete your cry of
“Only peace never war”
Quickly, quickly please delete this
I also want peace and not war
Qouth the raver “just ignore”
“Profit? Said I “Bush is evil?”
Profit how? It’s not for oil.
Whether Saddam stays or whether
Saddam goes determines peace or war
And still yet all undaunted on this
Thought I am taunted
And I also stay undaunted yet I
Still can’t just ignore
“Will there ever be peace in Iraq?
Really, really, I implore”
Quoth the raver, “just ignore
“Now sir,” said I, “on the level, don’t you
Think Saddam’s the devil
And he’d gladly terrorize us
If he could, from shore to shore
Tell this soul cuz I don’t get it, if
We leave be would he just quit it?
And just fade away to bother us no more?
Would he walk away and bother us no more
Qouth the raver, “just ignore”
Be these words a sign of parting, poetry
Pages I won’t be charting
Least of all will I read your entries, no
I’ll peruse no more
I won’t glance upon one more posting
One more radical roasting
I don’t say this to be boasting, never again
Will you grace my pixelled door
Sir I speak from my heart, stay
Off my pixelled door
Qouth the raver, “just ignore
And the raver is still posting, still is
Posting, still is posting
Below the poster of “Dubya” just above
My pixelled door
No matter how hard I keep trying
I cant keep my eyes from prying
Back to the pages my fingers flying
To see if he has posted more
Even tho I don’t want to go back
--Back there anymore
Why, oh why can’t I just ignore!

Mr. Poe,
I've always been an admirer of your work, but this update on your classic is fantstic. It will ever be a part of my "Undying Heart". Excellent bit of satire.

Ah Gordy, Your Tell-Tale Heart speaks to us all -- this Raver needs to remove the Masque of Red Death because Saddam could bring the Fall of the House of USher. Great play on Poe's words. Great message as well.

Actually you haven't "desicrated" it. Mimicry is the sincerest form of flattery, after all. I've written a few spoofs of the famous blackbird poem myself *grin*.
